Well, it starts badly with some of the worst acting I’ve seen in a long time along side an almost totally unnecessary narration. I mean fine, use narration to set the scene but after that let the story tell the story.

Other than that it was entertaining. True there were moments of shakey cam that the movie would have been much improved without, but the overall story was told well.

When you’re born with the name Maleficent, you’re really at a disadvantage, the name suggests evil Malediction, Malfeasance and indeed Maleficence. Not really sure where I was going with this, but it seemed important.

This movie also makes me want to go and see Sleeping Beauty as I feel there were any number of shout outs to that old movie as well as many scenes that were created to copy scenes from the Disney original (I’ve never seen it though so I can’t be sure)

Took longer to find an opportunity to write this chapter, it’s been a long and busy week.

850ish words. It’s really only a moping up chapter. I knew it wasn’t going to take long to write, I just needed the time to do it.

Warning Spoilers

Feels like they’re trying to reboot the series, going back in time as an excuse to bring back dead characters (it’s Marvel)

The story feels at times as if it walks roughshod over the earlier movies ignoring certain details for convenience and yet using clips from those movies to suggest that there really is a continuity here.

For example, why would mystique be willing to work with Magneto to make the first movie after what happens here? As I say it’s a bit of a reboot, maybe they never will work together now. (it’s all rather confusing really)

Logan is the only one to go back in time, he replaces the him there. Then he leave the 1973 version of him to return to the new present. The 1973 version then live merrily for (I think it was) 50 years only to have his life wiped out suddenly by the return of the mind of the future Logan. Perhaps it wouldn’t have felt quite so much like murder if the newly returned Logan had both sets of memories, but he doesn’t. (Okay not murder, its more like amnesia, but the Logan that was will never be again – it feels like a bad end for the noble hero)

There is also an irritating trope where a hero goes back in time to fix something so that the present he or she came from never existed. These things always end in slaughter for those left in behind. It’s no doubt because the writer feels the slaughter will never happen in the new time line and so he has a chance to massacre the heroes. It’s a trope that itself has been done to death and I’m not even sure it going back in time would be able to revive it.

For all it’s faults though it was an entertaining movie. I’m torn between giving it 3 and 4 stars. in the end though.

One final word. Marvel movies have a habit of showing an after credit teaser, the idea no doubt is to get you to watch the credits in order to be rewarded with something extra. In Spiderman 2 the teaser was a clip of this movie. In this movie the teaser seems to be a clip of yet another movie, probably Guardians of the Galaxy (a movie I have mixed feelings about). If they continue doing that, I’m probably going to be among those who won’t bother to wait for the final credits to play through. I don’t need to see clips of a future movie, especially if it’s a movie I already plan to see.
